CVAs Speak From Experience

How has becoming Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA)  helped you and your organization?  Why would you encourage others to earn this credential?

I cannot begin to tell you how proud I am to have this credential! Truly for me this was probably the single most important exercise (especially the Portfolio) that has helped me to really value what I do as a volunteer administrator and really commit to the profession. I did not find it easy to do but it was worth it. Thanks again. I feel so very privileged to join so many others in using the CVA as we develop better volunteer programs and effectively lead volunteers.

the main benefit of receiving the CVA was a chance to look at myself and learn how I operated and interacted with others.  It was both an affirming and humbling experience.  The substantive outcome in receiving the certification was that my supervisor was so impressed that he gave me a sustained superior rating in our merit system.

The benefits of earning your CVA?
a) The opportunity of searching into the depth of my personal philosophy of  volunteerism and learning who I truly am & what I truly believe, reassured my vocation.
b) Being accepted as a professional on an administrative salary schedule.
c) Extending my horizons through learning from colleagues and making my commitment to the profession through participation in the AVA organization.

Having a CVA has opened doors for me that I might not have had before - such as giving me some added credibility as a professional manager of volunteers.  I have gotten consulting work as well as foundation funding for projects and curriculum that I have written.  Also, I was able to demand a salary comparable to any director in my last position In this global world it is important to have some kind of professional title and earning your CVA gives you that.

It has definitely heightened my profile both with (my organization) and more importantly, with the regional municipality of which we are a part.  I think it has helped people generally to understand the role of the Administrator of Volunteer Resources better. It is also an affirmation (or reaffirmation) that you do really know what you are doing.  Plus it is a very marketable item when looking for employment or when doing training or consultingand it makes me feel very proud of myself and the work that I do.

The certification validates my role as a member of the executive staff of nine at this church of 3,000. Until this year I was the only non-ordained member of this staff. I encourage others to do it for their own personal professional discipline, and to enhance the efforts of AVA which advocates for our profession.
