MOTIVATED MENTORS WORK MAGIC IN TRAINING NEW VOLUNTEERS

Ruth Buell, Monterey Bay Aquarium, California

Session Description: In this workshop we will discuss the organization of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Mentor Program, including recruitment, training, recognition and rewards.  This organization has developed a Mentor Program where experienced volunteers take on the responsibility of mentoring new volunteers. Over 60 Mentors help train new Guides.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify a component of new volunteer training that could be done by experienced volunteers (Mentors) in their own organization
2. Identify the qualifications necessary to become a Mentor, and be able to write a job description for the position
3. List at least three things that could be provided as rewards for Mentors, such as special training, behind the scenes tours, field trips, recognition dinners, etc.
4. Develop Mentor recruitment, training and supervision plan that is realistic, fair and most of all fun!
