MOTIVATED MENTORS WORK MAGIC IN TRAINING NEW VOLUNTEERS Ruth Buell, Monterey Bay Aquarium, California Session Description: In this workshop we will discuss the organization
of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Mentor Program, including recruitment,
training, recognition and rewards. This organization has developed a
Mentor Program where experienced volunteers take on the responsibility of
mentoring new volunteers. Over 60 Mentors help train new Guides. Learning Objectives: Level: All

1. Identify a component of new volunteer
training that could be done by experienced volunteers (Mentors) in their
own organization
2. Identify the qualifications necessary to
become a Mentor, and be able to write a job description for the
position
3. List at least three things that could be provided as
rewards for Mentors, such as special training, behind the scenes tours,
field trips, recognition dinners, etc.
4. Develop Mentor
recruitment, training and supervision plan that is realistic, fair and
most of all fun!
