INCREASING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Ruth Buell, Monterey Bay Aquarium, California

Session Description: Because of the recent slumps in the economy, we are being forced to look at roles formerly played by paid staff that might be handled by volunteers.  In this session, we will review one institution's approach to this problem, and consider how these techniques might be helpful to your organization.

Learning Objectives:
1. Evaluate your and others' views of roles that can be played by volunteers
2. Outline a process for volunteer recruitment, training and evaluation
3. Review the types of information to include in volunteer job descriptions
4. Compare electronic, paper and personal contact methods of communication
5. Ensure a balance between under- and over-involvement of volunteers
6. Share samples of newsletters, job listings, job descriptions and surveys

Level:  All
