Strategic Plan

Introduction

When Katie Campbell, CVA, brought her work as executive director to a close on June 30, 2003, the board of directors of the Association for Volunteer Administration opted for an interim period before hiring a new executive director. During this period, they would focus on a Visioning and Transformational Change process to reposition AVA for growth and development in the 21st century. This process was funded by a grant from The UPS Foundation. The board retained the services of The Summit Planning Group, Peoria Heights, Illinois and its lead consultant, Dr. John R. Throop to analyze the association and its work and to facilitate the board process.

During the planning process, Dr. Throop worked closely with the interim executive director, Pam Pettengell, as well as with Paige Tucker, the marketing and membership director.  Departing board president Denny Barnett and incoming president Nancy Gaston helped in the formation of an international planning task force to work through key elements of the process and to provide perspectives and recommendations to the board.
Dr. Throop also facilitated focus groups of AVA members and leaders. At ICVA, he met with American and Canadian volunteer managers in national organizations, as well as a Canadian focus group and a group of international participants. He held two professional consultant/trainer telephone sessions, and met with 10 groups of members and non-members in cities around the United States.

In these sessions, Dr. Throop asked participants about their views of AVAs purpose, what they liked and did not like about AVAs services, professional development opportunities and products. They also reflected on emerging needs and trends that AVA needed to address to stay relevant and current with the volunteer management field. A focus group report is available separately on the AVA web site or directly from the AVA office.

In two meetings, the board of directors worked diligently to articulate a new vision and mission for AVA, and to identify the key strategies the association must undertake to realize the vision and fulfill the mission. At the June 2004 meeting, the board officially voted to accept the plan and to implement it.
