"If you do it, make
sure a system is in place to make sure that all papers are filed and
not lost in the shuffle of Board turnover each year. Our local
group, Houston Association of Volunteer Administrators (HAVA), found
out this year when we got denied for a grant from one of our
longtime supporters, that our 501(c)(3) status had lapsed several
years ago. No one knew. Apparently, a paper that was sent to us a
few years after our initial filing was never returned to the IRS and
our status was then changed. Luckily, we still are non-profit
classified, but just as a private foundation. We are in the process
of now backtracking to correct the issue and get reinstated as a
501(c)(3). My suggestion is to have your status verified every few
years and not assume anything."

"If there's a down side
to incorporation it's having to remember to keep it
up-to-date. Our DOVIA fortunately has a pro bono attorney
making sure we file properly with the Secretary of State. Even
with a manual for our board something that only happens once a year
can get overlooked."
