The CVA Credential - A Mark of Excellence!

CVA LogoCore Competencies and
Content Outline (updated in 2004)

As the international professional association for this field, AVA has identified the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for competent/satisfactory management of volunteer resources today. The core competencies are determined by topic experts in the field, verified through surveys of practitioners, and updated every 4-5 years.

AVA completed an update of this content outline in early 2004, identifying the following five Core Competencies:

  • Professional Principles  (ethics, pluralism, professional development, advocacy)

  • Leadership (types and models)

  • Management ( models, tools, accountability)

  • Planning (strategic, operational)

  • Human Resources Management (volunteers, staff)

A detailed Content Outline that further defines these core competencies is available.  This outline forms the basis for the AVA credential, Certified in Volunteer Administration (CVA), beginning with the 2005 credentialing cycle.

Are you developing a course or curricula in volunteer administration?  If so, the Content Outline will serve as an excellent guide for how you can ensure your content is consistent with the standards established by AVA.  If you wish to use this Content Outline for this purpose AVA requests that you complete a Letter of Intent form and return it to AVA. You may also want to consider AVA Educational Registration for your workshop or course as a way to obtain additional visibility and credibility.
