Positioning the Profession: Communicating the Power of Results for
Volunteer Leadership Professionals
In 1998, AVA launched an initiative to re-position the profession of
volunteer administration - to build the case for supporting the effective
management of volunteer resources on all levels.
With the invaluable support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the
Leighty Foundation, AVA began the process of re-positioning by surveying
members and practitioners in the field on key issues affecting their work.
A Think Tank of funders, practitioners and academic leaders then met to
develop a case statement for volunteer management that challenged
assumptions, identified core beliefs and proposed key messages that force
thinking about the profession in a new way.
In Positioning the
Profession: Communicating the Power of Results for Volunteer Leadership
Professionals, implications for practitioners and key messages
directed to stakeholders (executives, boards of directors, funders and
practitioners) are clearly articulated. An "Inventory of Personal
Competency", practical suggestions for those in the field and sample
re-positioning discussion sessions with exercises are included.
Edited by Nora Silver, Ph.D., Director of the Volunteerism Project in
San Francisco, CA USA, Positioning the Profession is your tool
for re-thinking how we see our work and how we communicate its impact and
importance to others.
